Cold winter kills at least 40 in Afghanistan (AP)

Melting ice on Danube damages boats, restaurants (AP)

…Heavy Snow for the Central Mid-Atlantic and Central Appalachians…

Heavy snow is now falling across portions of the central Appalachians as the storm system that brought severe weather to the south yesterday lifts northeast. Precipitation from this fast moving event will likely continue over the Mid-Atlantic coast through very early Monday morning. However, in the wake of the storm, sunny skies will prevail for much of Monday.

…Fire Weather Danger in the Southern Plains Ahead of Next System…

The storm system moving through the center of the country has brought windy conditions and widespread snow to the Rockies. Ahead of the cold front, winds will pick up across the southern plains on Monday. Dry conditions combined with sustained wind speeds of 20-40 mph, gusts to 60mph, will cause blowing dust and elevated fire weather conditions. Should a fire start in this area, it has the potential to spread quickly.

Joplin High School Demolition Begins Amid Tornado Tourism Controversy (ContributorNetwork)

ContributorNetwork – KOAM-TV reports demolition of Joplin High School began Friday nearly nine months after a deadly EF5 tornado swept through the city of 50,000 people. The building will be torn down to make way for a new school to be constructed at the same site beginning in May. The building’s demolition comes at a time when the Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau is under fire for a tourist map that has citizens upset over “tornado tourism.”
